Fog Lamps

Driving in foggy or misty condition just with head lights on could be a dangerous situation for the drivers. In such extreme conditions it is necessary that the vehicles are fitted with fog lamps. Fog lamps are most commonly located beneath vehicle’s headlights. They are mostly wide light beams and bar-shaped. Most of the fog lamps are mounted low on the vehicle and are placed to aim low. While they can be white or yellow some of them have both colors within same lens. Many vehicles come fitted with fog lamps but even if they are not these can be easily added later.

They mostly come in tungsten- halogen bulbs while many new cars may also have high intensity lamps which may use different minerals like halide, sodium and mercury to operate.

Fog lamps are intended to show the immediate foreground, lane markings and edges of the roads. It is advisable to use fog lamps only in extreme weather such as heavy rain, snow or fog and that too at low speeds as other drivers may find it difficult because of the increased glare. Excessive foreground illumination can even cause the vision to be affected which can result in collision with road or the pavement. In very low visibility only the fog lamps should be used and not the car headlights. Fog lamps will penetrate more thus, giving a clearer vision for the driver which is extremely important in such conditions.

Driving lamps are not the same as fog lamps as most automakers and suppliers often use these terms interchangeably. Though fog lamps come in white light as well as other colors, it is better to go in for single colored beam. Due to water vapor in atmosphere white light seems to disperse more than a single light. Yellow light fog lamps are the best choice as they are equally good for clearer view as well as being of suitable wavelength makes it easy for other drivers to spot the vehicle. There are many automakers who manufacture fog lamps. Besides this there are numerous online retailers who provide with a wide choice.

Fog lamps just not give a clear vision in fog and snow but they are also used as a fashionable add- on to the vehicles. They add a more stylish and sturdy touch to the overall look. But their use should be limited to adverse weather only as the additional glare in clear weather may be dangerous.
